By taking an abandoned nest as a platform for observation this small heron stands and waits. Crouched and motionless it keeps its neck coiled till the opportunity arises and strikes. It pushes forward its neck, head and body simultaneously either staying with its feet in place or leaping headfirst on the prey. It captures the prey with the bill or it may impale it.
