Crop milk
Torcaza común/Eared Dove
Torcaza común/Eared Dove© Roberto Ares
Characteristic of all Columbiformes. During the last week the prolactine stimulates the accumulation of proteins and lipids on the outer cells of the crop both in the male and female. These cells transform into a dense mass called crop milk. During the first four o five days this crop milk is the only food the chicks get. Then it is increasingly alternated with seeds.
