New bird species
In April this photo was published under the name of Smooth-billed Ani, a species rarely seen at RECS. Some features cast doubt on the identification of this bird. Consultation with birders with a close knowledge of these two species and the evaluation of other pictures taken on the occasion confirmed this was a Greater Ani. So, this becomes the first photographic record of this bird species at CSER. There was only one sighting record cited by Clotaire Coulon for RECS
Here we can clearly appreciate one of the diagnostic characteristics of an adult Greater Ani: the whitish iris. The two sightings so near in time and the vagrancy of this species to CSER make us believe this is the same individual
