Scolopendrids - Family Scolopendridae

Order Scolopendrida
Family Scolopendridae

A scolondrid by its characteristics: Scolopendrids have between 2 and 23 segments and only one pair of leg in each of them. A pair of hindlegs, called anal legs, extend from the last segment. They are different from the others and they are no used to walk but for defence.

It is an aggressive and active predatos. It feeds on small invertebrates: worms, snails and other arthropods. It jumps on the prey to inject the venom to stun or kill it. It uses the forciples, claw-like structures, connected to the venom glands. In humans scolopendrid bites may produce pain, fever and vomiting. It is rarcely fatal. Since it is a predatr, among other things, of insects “annoying for man” is quite beneficial.
