Snout beetles - Family Curculionidae

Order Coleoptera
Family Curculionidae
This family is composed of the so called snout beetles and it is one of the largest families. They are herbivores, which makes them beneficial to man when they are a biological control and a pest when they predate on agricultural crops.
The taxonomy of this family is quite controversial. Thou some 24 subfamilies are recognized only eigth are accepted globally.
These coleopterans are easily recognized by their proboscis. In general they are small-sized. They are holometabolous insects, that is, they go through the stages of egg, larva, pupa and adult. The adult has two pairs of wings but they cannot fly. The larvae have no legs and present a pair of big mandibles. They are whitish and C-like.
Both the adult and the larva are polyphagous. The adult feeds on aerial parts while the larva is hypogeal and feeds on roots.
